Sign up for Summer Band!
Welcome and Introduction
Welcome, parents and students,
We're excited to introduce you to the BCSC Band Program! The BCSC band directors are here to give your child a unique way to build self-confidence and grow artistically and emotionally through instrumental music! And, it all starts now -in 5th-grade- by attending a sign-up night and following the steps to join band.
Anyone can join -you do not need any experience playing an instrument or reading music. Each elementary band rehearses during the school day, which leaves your after-school time and weekends open for your other activities. We have one evening concert near the end of each quarter and this is where we combine all the elementary school bands into one giant band! This is an awesome event you won't want to miss!
Begin now by signing up for an appointment at one of our "Explore the Instruments" nights. We'll take you through the steps to join band.
We begin teaching 6th-grade band with a FREE Summer Band class (one hour a day for three weeks) on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at Columbus East High School. We start band in the summer because we can start each unique instrument in a separate class that is taught by one of our BCSC band directors. For example, since everyone in the clarinet class is learning clarinet, the students don't have to wait for the teacher to spend equal time helping the flutes, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and percussion! By attending Summer Band, when school begins in the fall in mixed-instrument classes, students have enough knowledge to begin playing as a full band.
You and your parents make this decision -you can choose flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, or percussion! Our website includes videos that show you how each instrument sounds and how that sound is produced. If you need help deciding, you can contact your band director.
Our website will take you through the various options, but most parents will choose a rental plan because of its flexibility and convenience.
No worries -this describes just about everyone who starts in band! Every instrument starts by learning just one note -we teach you how to read that note on the music staff and how to make that sound on your instrument. As we teach you more new notes, you'll be able to play more songs!
